A practical answer
Quantity affects laser-cutting price through more than multiplication or an automatic discount. It changes how preparation, nesting, material use, machine time, sorting, inspection, packing, and production scheduling are distributed. In a larger batch, one-time preparation may be shared across more units, so unit price can fall; total cost still rises with material, cutting time, and post-cut operations.
Short answer
If parts are identical, the file is approved, material is available, and production runs the order once, greater quantity can reduce the preparation share in unit price. “100 parts” is not enough information, though: one position in quantity 100 differs from twenty positions in quantity five. State quantity for every position.
What the quantity effect consists of
The main factors are one-time file and job preparation, material and nesting, machine time, and operations after cutting. Different contours, holes, material changes, marking, sorting, inspection, and packing can all alter the route. Savings cannot be promised without the full set of contours and nesting rules.
One large batch and a repeat order are not the same
Five hundred parts made in one run can share preparation and nesting but require storage, full material funding, and handling of all finished parts. Five regular deliveries of one hundred may require separate preparation, material, and planning. Planning nesting for a batch
Send the complete position list, quantities, materials, thicknesses, and rules about combining parts on a sheet. Nesting depends on dimensions, clearances, grain direction where relevant, remnants, and sorting requirements. It cannot be inferred from a total count alone.
Terms to request in a commercial quotation
Ask the quotation to distinguish preparation, material, cutting, post-cut operations, delivery pattern, price per unit where relevant, total price, validity assumptions, and factors that trigger recalculation. Unknown items should not be treated as zero.
When a larger quantity is worth ordering
A larger batch makes sense when the design is stable, storage and funding are acceptable, material is available, and the planned demand is real. Do not buy excess merely to pursue a nominal unit-price reduction if revision or demand risk is high.
