Two supply options
With customer material, the contractor receives specific sheets or blanks for a defined job. This is useful for a particular heat, coating, certificate, color, or existing stock. The sheet may nevertheless have the wrong thickness, corrosion, distortion, contamination, or storage damage. It requires an agreed receipt check before cutting.
With contractor material, the supplier procures metal or uses stock and can choose a sheet format and nesting plan for the part mix. This does not authorize an unapproved substitution of grade, coating, or thickness.

The table illustrates risk allocation, not universal commercial terms. Put the chosen rules in the order, specification, or contract.
Receipt record and batch identification
For customer material, record the date, owner, number of sheets or blanks, batch marking, format, stated thickness, visible condition, and receipt remarks. State which properties were not checked. The record does not prove every material property, but it shows what arrived and with which information.
Apply the same logic to contractor material: procurement records, batch marking, a link to the order, and a substitution record when relevant. Preserve the connection between sheet batch, nesting plan, and finished-part set, especially when parts will later be bent, welded, or certified.
Separate reusable remnants, process offcuts, and damaged or uncertain remnants. Agree who decides usability, how remnants are marked and stored, when they are returned, and who pays transport. A write-off should identify whether the material is normal process scrap, rejected incoming material, or a piece still awaiting a decision.
Technical requirements for quality and process do not determine legal ownership of sheets and remnants. Ownership, transfer, compensation, write-off, and responsibility are commercial conditions that the parties must agree before work.
What “scrap” actually means
The word may refer to nesting skeletons, narrow strips, process tabs, rejected parts, a damaged sheet, or a remnant useful for another order. One percentage hides these differences.
Use at least four categories:
1. Material in accepted parts. Metal contained in conforming finished items. 2. Reusable sheet remnant. A sufficiently large, identified shape suitable for future work. 3. Non-reusable process offcut. Material lost because of sheet geometry, margins, lead-ins, bridges, or process constraints. 4. Reject. A part that fails the agreed requirements. Do not count it automatically as ordinary scrap before identifying the cause.
Sheet utilization is not a permanent property of a machine or contractor. It depends on sheet size, part quantity and rotation, common-line rules, bridges, edge margins, texture direction, coating, and quality constraints. Compare providers on the same part mix and restrictions.
When supplying your own metal is useful
Customer material is reasonable when it is already purchased, has a special grade or coating, belongs to an approved traceability system, or is used in a critical structure. It can also use existing stock from a known batch.
Before delivery, confirm grade, nominal thickness, format, coating, batch number, surface requirements, and expected edge condition. Do not infer missing data from color or packaging.
The practical weakness is an inconvenient or distorted sheet format. It may not support the expected nesting yield. Identify this before production rather than after cutting.
When contractor-supplied material is more convenient
This route reduces customer operations: procurement, transport, and remnant handling move into one order. It is convenient for small or changing part mixes where buying a full batch would create excess stock.
The customer must still specify grade, thickness, surface, coating, mechanical properties, grain direction, or certificate when these affect the product. If a particular grade is not critical, define an allowed material group and how suitability for later operations is checked.
The contractor must not make silent substitutions. Similar grades may behave differently in cutting, welding, painting, or forming. A substitution is an approval event.
How to allocate responsibility
Tie responsibility to a specific action and record. “The contractor is responsible for quality” is too broad. Define who checks documents and sheets, approves substitutions, stores remnants, accepts parts, and handles nonconformity.

Records should match risk. A critical series part needs more traceability than a one-off blank without special requirements.
Comparing economics correctly
Compare the entire route, not sheet price alone. For customer material include purchase, delivery, packaging, inspection, storage, remnant return, and risk of an unsuitable blank. For contractor material include metal, procurement, internal logistics, remnant records, and documentation.
On the same nesting plan compare sheet count, truly reusable remnants, included parts, edge requirements, and included services. A cutting-only quote using customer metal is not comparable with a delivered-part quote including material when transport, packing, or inspection differ.
For series work, ask for the calculation method rather than only a utilization percentage. Different sheet formats can produce the same percentage, while a usable remnant may be more valuable than a marginally higher yield.
Common mistakes
1. Assuming customer material is automatically cheaper while ignoring transport, handling, inspection, and return. 2. Calling every remnant scrap or every remnant reusable without a criterion. 3. Approving “equivalent” material without an allowed-substitution list. 4. Combining rejected parts and nonconforming incoming material. 5. Disputing scrap after production because no rule existed before it.
Safe selection algorithm
1. Define critical grade, thickness, surface, certificate, batch, and geometry requirements. 2. Choose customer, contractor, or mixed supply by part group. 3. Agree sheet format, substitutions, and documents. 4. Compare nesting and total route cost on the same part mix. 5. Separate reusable remnant, offcut, reject, and uncertain material. 6. Define ownership and marking of remnants. 7. Agree acceptance and nonconformity handling. 8. Use a test batch for the first order when risk justifies it.
Checklist before placing the order

What cannot be determined without data
Without the part mix, sheet format, material requirements, quantities, and acceptance rules, no one can state which route is cheaper. There is no universal scrap percentage or nesting yield. Responsibility for material, substitutions, remnants, and rejects belongs in the specific order.
If the part will be welded, painted, bent, or used critically, include the requirements of those operations. Suitability for laser cutting alone does not prove suitability of the final component.
Which option to choose in practice
For a small batch with no special heat requirement, contractor material often gives the clearest total price and avoids separate procurement. Grade, thickness, coating, and substitutions still need to be recorded.
For a stable series, customer material may be efficient when the company already has a supply contract, warehouse, and traceability. Organize batch transfer, sheet accounting, and remnant return so production does not lose time searching for material.
A mixed model is normal: the customer supplies critical grades while the contractor procures standard positions. Every group needs its own rule.
The real question is not “whose metal is cheaper?” but “which allocation of procurement, inspection, remnants, and responsibility fits this batch?”
How to prepare a clear quotation request
Send the part list, quantity per position, material or allowed range, thickness, file format, surface and edge requirements, and downstream operations. For stock already available, add sheet format, quantity, marking, and a photograph of the packaging or sheet. A photograph helps reveal questions but does not replace a document.
Define what “scrap” means to you. Must every large remnant return? May it remain registered for a later batch? Without a written rule, the customer may expect return while the contractor treats it as part of the process.
For the first order, agree on an exception route. If nesting shows poor yield or incoming material has a defect, the contractor pauses preparation and informs the customer. A new sheet format, grade substitution, or split batch begins only after approval.
This approach gives the customer a transparent calculation and keeps the contractor from accepting responsibility for material it could not verify. A vague dispute about “extra metal” becomes a precise question about batch, sheet, nesting plan, and agreed rule.
