What “fibre” and “cable package” mean

In everyday language, users may call the complete flexible assembly from the source to the welding head “the fibre.” Depending on the system, it may contain an optical cable, gas hose, signal or power lines, interlock circuits and other elements. Clarify which length a specification describes: the optical fibre, output cable, complete package or usable length from the equipment housing.

Cable construction and the minimum permitted bend radius depend on the exact equipment series. A value from one model cannot be transferred to every laser system. Take the required bend radius, head connection and routing rules from the documentation for the ordered configuration.

How to calculate length without an arbitrary allowance

Planning begins with operations, not a catalogue. Mark the source location, cable exit, welding positions and the sides from which the operator must approach each joint. For a frame, enclosure or several tables, the farthest point may be a particular internal seam rather than the edge of the room.

Divide the route into sections:

1. from the source to the organised cable exit; 2. along guards, supports or suspension to the workstation; 3. from the fixed route to the farthest operating point; 4. the movement allowance required to orient the head without tension; 5. the service allowance explicitly required by the manufacturer.

Measure the routed path, not a straight diagonal. Model bends with the permitted radius and account for changes in height. Then check whether the same path works when a large part is loaded, the table moves or the operator changes sides. The allowance must have a purpose; “another few metres just in case” is not an engineering calculation.

Length for different working areas

### One stationary table

The package may be shorter when the source is next to one table, but check whether the operator works only at the front edge or also walks around the part, changes height and reaches internal seams. Table area alone does not define the route.

### Large frame or enclosure

For a large product, mark every relevant weld and approach side. Include the path around corners and supports. A cable long enough to touch a remote point may still be unsuitable if it reaches that point under tension or forces the head into an incorrect orientation.

### Several workstations

One laser source serving several tables needs a longer and more carefully organised route. Check pedestrian and trolley traffic, temporary storage and where the head is safely parked between operations. Sometimes relocating the source or using a separate station is safer than selecting the maximum length.

### Large part on the floor

Floor work adds the risk of driving over, crushing or contaminating the package. The route must be protected and visible, and movement of people, lifting equipment and parts must be considered. Extra length left in uncontrolled loops increases rather than reduces risk.

Why bend radius matters more than extra metres

An optical cable is not an ordinary extension lead. Excessive bending, twisting, pulling or crushing can damage the assembly even when the nominal length is sufficient. A sharp turn around a column cannot be made acceptable by adding slack next to it. The route needs supports and guides that maintain the specified radius throughout movement.

Observe not only the static arrangement but also the cable during work. A loop can tighten when the operator changes sides, the head is raised or a part is rotated. Define parking and handling so the head is not left hanging from the package and the line is not used to pull the unit.

Lengths found in complete systems

There is no single standard value for all handheld laser welding systems. Manufacturers offer different lengths, but the same number does not guarantee equal useful reach. Confirm length together with the source and head model, package composition, connector location and permitted routing. An optional longer assembly may also change delivery, service or compatibility conditions.

Common selection mistakes

  • Measuring a straight line instead of the real routed path.
  • Adding an arbitrary reserve without deciding where it will be stored.
  • Ignoring height changes, guards, table corners and part movement.
  • Assuming that a longer cable permits a smaller bend radius.
  • Leaving loops in trolley or pedestrian routes.
  • Comparing lengths without confirming what is included in the cable package.
  • Using a value from another model or equipment revision.
  • Planning several stations without a safe parking point for the head.

Practical verification before ordering

1. Mark the source, cable exit, worktables and every welding point on the plan. 2. Add real obstacles, guards, passages, storage and equipment movement. 3. Draw the permitted route and change of height. 4. Identify the farthest joint and every side from which it must be approached. 5. Measure the route in sections and add only documented movement and service allowances. 6. Model the permitted bend radius at every turn. 7. Check the route during loading, part rotation and operator movement. 8. Ask the supplier to confirm the source, head, length, package composition and routing in writing. 9. Agree on supports, suspension, protection and head parking. 10. Verify the actual installation before production use.

What cannot be determined without data

Room dimensions alone do not determine the correct fibre length. A layout of the source, tables, guarding and passages is required together with representative parts, working points and the exact welding-system model.

The permitted bend radius, pulling limits, connector requirements and package composition cannot be inferred from appearance. Do not claim that a selected length will serve several stations until the route and operating scenarios have been checked.

Cable length also cannot be considered separately from laser safety. High-power industrial systems may belong to the highest hazard classes, so the route must remain within the controlled arrangement and support guarding, interlocks, training and local safety requirements.
